Dharma Sunday — Breaking Open into Love: The Power of Laughter to Liberate (Online)

Join Lama Liz as we investigate the role of laughter as a liberating element on the spiritual path. In the Study of Religion, laughter has been explored as a means by which a person can become available to different forms of knowing, being, and experiencing. In one study of laughter, the author remarks that for the Gnostics, “Laughter is a sign of receptivity; with it, the body literally speaking, opens up.” Laughter represents not only a mode for deeper intellectual understanding but also a visceral experience through which the entire organism of the listener is made malleable and transformed.

Similarly, humor in Buddhism has been seen as a method by which to overcome the serious and concentrated attachment we experience towards the belief in an enduring, independent, self. The Buddhist virtue of nonattachment is intimately connected to humor in that when we are able to laugh at ourselves and at our sufferings, we loosen the hold these have on us. We are able to step back, observe, and relax into the vast sea of love in which we are always swimming.

Dharma Sundays with Natural Dharma Fellowship are now taking place most Sundays. These sessions, led by highly trained NDF Dharma and guest teachers, include guided meditation, teachings, and time for discussions. A wide range of topics are offered at the discretion of the teacher. On one Sunday per month, we are offering our year-long Dharma Dialogues program during this same time slot.
