Traditional Bhutanese Paintings by Sangay

Sangay, a young Bhutanese Thangha painter, has become a friend of Natural Dharma. Trained for six years at the Bhutan National Institute of Traditional Arts and Crafts, he won 3rd place in the Traditional Painting Category. For seven years thereafter he was apprenticed with Lopen Tobgay, master of Bhuddhist Painting in Bhutan. Sangay now lives with his wife and two young sons and may be visited daily at his shop, NINDHA KARSUM HANDICRAFT, located in Kawajangsa, in the heart of Thimphu.

Sangay uses acrylic and natural paints imported from Nepal, as well as colors obtained from pure local minerals. To paint the delicate details of deities’ faces, he uses a brush made of cat hair.

Sangay’s repertoire includes deities and other figures in a variety of color palates along with intricate, sacred mantras and mandalas.

Sangay will donate 10% of each sale to NDF’s Manifesting Our Mandala campaign.
