Online Dharma Sunday (10/1) – You Ain’t Nothin’ but a Hound Dog: The Straight and Twisted Dharma of Rock ’n’ Roll

More than we may realize, we are shaped by the pop music of our culture. For a couple of generations of us, that means the rock ’n’ roll we grew up with, the songs we heard played repeatedly on the radio or the record player or American Bandstand. Their insistent 4/4 beat pounded an assortment of attitudes and assumptions into our consciousness long before we had any tools for sorting them out.
In this talk, we’ll put on our dharma ears and take a fresh listen to classic rock tunes, from Elvis Presley and Chubby Checker to the Beach Boys and the Doors. We’ll expose some lyrics that subtly nurture unhelpful perspectives (wrong view) and find some that manage to stumble onto intuitive wisdom — and some that do both, depending on how we listen. Let’s rock!
Dharma Sundays with Natural Dharma Fellowship are now taking place most Sundays. These sessions, led by highly trained NDF Dharma and guest teachers, include guided meditation, teachings, and time for discussions. A wide range of topics are offered at the discretion of the teacher. On one Sunday per month, we are offering our year-long Dharma Dialogues program during this same time slot.
