Monday Night Meditation – Buddha-Dharma in the Stories of J.D. Salinger: A Four-Part Series/ “For Esmé — with Love and Squalor.” (Online)
Live Online: 5:00–6:30 pm ET
Exploring wisdom and compassion in Salinger’s groundbreaking mid-century short fiction. Aug. 5: “A Perfect Day for Bananafish.” Aug. 12: “Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut” and “Just Before the War with the Eskimos.” Sept 9: “For Esmé — with Love and Squalor.” Sept. 16: “Teddy.”
J.D. Salinger is probably the one writer most responsible for bringing the quest for enlightenment into popular American fiction. In his “Nine Stories,” he does this in a variety of brilliant, surprising ways. This four-part series, led by Dean Sluyter, author of “The Dharma Bum’s Guide to Western Literature,” will take a deep dive into several of the finest stories, with an emphasis on how they reveal the twin values of wisdom and compassion — on the page and in our own lives.
Recommended but not required: “Nine Stories,” by J.D. Salinger, paperback edition. If possible, before each session please read the story that will be discussed.
Guided meditation, a Dharma talk, and time for discussion offered by Natural Dharma Fellowship and Wonderwell Mountain Refuge. Open to everyone—please join us for inspiration, practice, and community.
