Dharma Sunday (10/3) – Punishment Is Not Part of the Path, Part 1
October 3, 2021
10:00 am – 12:00 pm EDT
In this two-part class, participants will be invited to study and reflect on a short teaching by Buddhadasa Bhikkhu entitled “The Prison of Life” (free download: https://www.suanmokkh.org/books/16). Acharya Akutobhaya (Kyira Korrigan) will guide participants in reflecting on the text while sharing what she has learned about prison journeys in her years as a correctional chaplain.
Just as prisons are rationalized as necessary containment for those whose criminal convictions make them untrustworthy with, or even undeserving of freedom, we rationalize our self-created imprisonment as a necessary means of avoiding unforgivable mistakes on our spiritual journey. Buddhadasa asks us to look at the prisons we make for ourselves out of desire for purity and goodness, our instincts and beliefs, and even our teachers. This is a subtle and challenging inquiry, but necessary for when commitment and practice brings you to a frustrated and joyless state.
Dharma Sundays with Natural Dharma Fellowship are now taking place most Sundays. These sessions, led by highly trained NDF Dharma and guest teachers, include guided meditation, teachings, and time for discussions. A wide range of topics are offered at the discretion of the teacher. On one Sunday per month, we are offering our year-long Dharma Dialogues program during this same time slot. Please join us for both the Dharma Sunday programs and for the Dharma Dialogues (details and registration here).
