Leo Shapiro

Leo Shapiro, MD, is a psychiatrist who graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1967 where he is currently an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and teaches medical students. He has had a private practice in psychiatry since 1971 as well as working as an inpatient psychiatrist and for the past 20 years as the main psychiatrist in a House of Correction.

He has been practicing Buddhism since 1998 and studies with Lamas Surya Das, John Makransky, and Willa Miller. He has taken training with Elizabeth Kubler Ross, helped many of his patients deal with the deaths of relatives and spouses, and has grieved the loss of a younger sister and brother-in-law. He has been trained as a hospice volunteer.

His current Buddhist practice includes contemplation of the Five Remembrances, which relate to the issues of growing old, sickness, and dying. He is a peer leader in Great Pond Sangha in North Andover,MA and is a participant in Natural Freedom lead by Lama Willa.
